Eco-friendly holiday ideas

It's October 25th.  Two months until Christmas.  So - today I have something a little different for you today... a selection of eco-friendly or natural holiday ideas.

Toss a hand knit washcloth and handcrafted bar of soap into an antique mason jar for a super quick last minute gift.  I cut a bar in half to fit in the mouth of my jar, but depending on the container you use, you may be able to add it in whole.  Second hand shops often have great glass containers that would be great for this.

Bake up a giant muffin in an oven safe pottery bowl for a twist on the standard holiday fruit bread.  Gift it with a cutting board and tea towel, or...
...wrap it up with a mug, some tea, and some in-season fruit for a great gift basket with something different and unexpected.  (If you happen to be using one of Remembrances' bowls, the giant muffin serves 4 - and there is still one left in the shop if you like this idea and don't have a bowl that would work).

Chop a log into varying heights, add some candles, pine cones, and if you choose, some greenery or flowers and you have a nearly instant holiday display that can last you from now until the end of winter.  Don't have the time, tools, or inclination to chop up a log?  There happen to be some lovely large wood slices in the shop that would work beautifully for this, and Tara has some great scented candles in jars that could complete the look.

New in the Shop - cards and prints

Lisa of L'immaginaria has brought in a great collection of cards and prints to the store.

Her beautiful cards are reproductions of scratch board originals printed on Arturo paper.
They would be great to keep on hand throughout the year for birthdays, celebrations and special events.
Some of them would make great Christmas / Holiday cards,

or they could be framed for your home decor.

If you are looking for a larger piece, there is a wide variety of prints to choose from.
Some of the prints are hand painted lino prints...

...and some are hand painted etchings.
As always, there is a much greater selection in the store than what I have included here.  Hop on in to take a look.   If you can't make it into the store, you can always find her on her own website and on Facebook.

In Store Today - Truffle Samples

Sandi, The Little Truffle Maker will be in the store from noon until 4:00 today sampling her new Raspberry Vodka Chocolate Truffles.  Can't make it in today?  She'll be back next Thursday - October 24 - also from noon until 4:00 with more samples.

If you CAN make it in to the shop, take a few minutes to check out Julie's original Halloween decorations.  Not your every day run-of-the-mill decorations...Original creations that will make your haunt stand out, like this one:
A large cauldron with a large spoon and part of the quote from the three witches from Shakespear's Macbeth (Act 4): Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble.

And this fantastic creation by Yvonne - a yard sign:

New theme this week

There's a new theme in the shop this week...inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven.

There is also a new central display.  Lots of Halloween related items, but if you look closely, many of them can actually be used year round.  Lanterns, plates, a quilt...all great items for year round use, but make a great feature when tied in all together with a few seasonal touches.

Not all is dark and eerie though.
There is still a great selection of pumpkins to be had.

Happy Haunting!

What's new in the shop this week?

It's the time of year where our thoughts turn to making our homes cozy for the long winter ahead...
Miriam of MiniMade has these new mason jar cozies in the shop.

They look lovely as she has displayed them here, in her own kitchen...

...but I think they would make a lovely gift.  Picture a mason jar, topped with one of these lovely handmade toppers, and inside - a hand knit washcloth and handcrafted bar of soap - or a batch of little cookies - or fancy chocolates ... oh my, the options are endless!

How would you fill it?  Feel free to leave us a comment!

You can also find Miriam on Pinterest (Facebook and Etsy links up above) if you can't pop into the store.

Hosting Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving is right around the corner.  Whether you are hosting an event at your home, or need a little hostess gift for someone else, the Rural Creators' Collective has so many unique and interesting items that would be perfect for the occasion.

I was in the shop Saturday and here are just a few of the pieces that caught my eye:
How about this lovely fruit basket (by Trinity) in lieu of the standard cornucopia?

Need a little fall colour?  Pat Marcoux has many photographs in the shop to add a great touch of colour.  As does Yvonne Parsons.

or a lovely stained glass piece...

Need a new pie plate for the ubiquitous pumpkin (or apple) pie? by Remembrances

Some lovely chargers for the table...either at each place setting or for a centerpiece.

 Candles (On A Branch Soaps)...

... or pot pourri to set the mood (Crow's Nest Primitives).

And a great French Press for those after dinner drinks (Waylin Enterprises).

Whatever you are looking for to add that extra little touch, I bet you can find it in the shop.

Thursday 3 October 2013

as of tomorrow...

I do apologize, I don't mean to overwhelm you with posts, but when I saw this I got a little excited!

As of tomorrow, the Lavender Oatmeal Soap from On a Branch Soaps will be available in the Rural Creators Collective store in Carlisle.  Hop on in to pick one up, or any of her other varieties (there's a coupon on the sidebar). I have tried a few myself and am very pleased with the quality...they smell great, they feel great, and they are lovely for the skin.  If you can't make it into the store, the links above are for her etsy shop and facebook page.  She ships.

new in the store

Julie of Rustic Revivals has been hard at work...
This item is new in the shop this week.  An antique milk can painted in an autumn theme.  It's right on the landing with plenty of other autumnal wonders she has displayed...works by a variety of artists.

She has even set up a beautiful display OUTSIDE the store...

...and added these great signs up the stairs to let people know what we are all about.
Also up the stairs, works by Paul and Monique of HandSigNow.  You will be meeting them here soon, as they are October's "Featured Artists".

And don't forget to pop in today to sample some of The Little Truffle Maker's chocolate truffles.

Wednesday 2 October 2013

Come sample some chocolates!

I'm giving you a day's notice so you can arrange your plans.  Tomorrow, October 3rd, Sandi The Little Truffle Maker will be handing out samples of her Orange Heat truffles right in the store!
What a great hostess gift this would make if you are attending a Thanksgiving dinner shortly...and there happens to be a coupon over on the side bar...
I'm pretty keen to try these green tea truffles, personally.
You can check out her Facebook page for other events, shows and sales she will be attending if you can't happen to make it in to the Carlisle store.
